Again, most “beginner” strap-ons are thong-style, which means you get less support than a harness that you can tighten on your thighs, and you end up with a pretty killer wedgie.

Ease of Use:

The downside to most harnesses is that they can be a pain in the butt to get on. You have to take the time to step into them, make sure you’re not all tangled up, and adjust the straps so it stays on your body, which can be annoying if you’re in the middle of getting hot and heavy. Because of this, “strapless strap-ons” were invented, and they are super popular. Versatility, ease of use, and durability are the three main factors to consider when looking at purchasing a strap-on. Harnesses that allow you to change out the size of the toy, adjust the waist and thighs, and are made of easy-to-wash materials tend to last longer, which means you and your partner will have less hassle when it comes to getting your freak on. Recently, a lot of media attention was given to a feminist blogger whose checked luggage was inspected by the TSA. Because luggage screeners are often looking for random motors/wires which will set off an inspection, the another way to to travel with sex toys without being subjected to additional screening is to travel with non-vibrating toys. Some non-vibrating toys look more non-phallic than others, but a lot of them probably won’t arouse suspicion, and like the Hitachi, some of them might be mistaken for back massagers. These are just a few of the types of toys that are more likely to fly under the radar if you’re concerned about traveling with sex toys in your carry-on or checked luggage. In an ideal world, traveling with sex toys would not be something to feel shame, stress, or embarassment over, but the reality is that that’s not always the case, and a lot of travelers are looking for items that might not be easily identified as toys if a luggage screener pulls them out of your bag, or see them on an X-Ray. For this reason, there are toys that exist that are made to look discreet and innocuous enough to give you peace of mind if you’re trying to fly somewhere with it.

Most books about fellatio focus on techniques and feel-good tricks. Going Down is one of the more comprehensive books on fellatio, and discusses anatomy, techniques, and how to incorporate sensual blow jobs into your relationship. For something that’s a little shorter, but contains some fabulous techniques and tips, Tickle His Pickle is a great (and quick!) read. Fellatio can be a fun and erotic way to express your feelings for your partner, help them relax after a long week, or start a night of hot sex off on the right foot. Whatever your purpose for wanting to become a blow job expert, lots of toys, books and sexy items exist to complement and enhance whatever you have in mind. It’s always good to remember that fellatio doesn’t always have to be just foreplay, but can be a fun sex act in and of itself.

Sex and masturbation are all about loving your body, having fun, and feeling good. Most people are familiar with safe sex when referring to sexual activity; using barrier methods to prevent the transmission of STIs and STDs. Not a lot of people think about safe sex toy use as a component of safe sex, but it is important too, whether using a toy with a partner(s) or using a toy by yourself. Body safe toys are not going to have irritating chemicals in them, are not going to have the potential to absorb body fluids ,and are safe to share with a partner without the risk of transmitting STDs/STIs and other bacteria from other people who’ve previously used that toy.

Not all sex toys are created equal, and with the thousands of toys that exist, there are many different materials that can harbor plasticizing chemicals, which come into contact with the most sensitive parts of your body. If you’re concerned about phthalates, or sensitive to latex or other materials, there is one very simple way to ensure any toy you get will be safe to use and will not irritate you; and that’s to get educated about toy materials. Any toy that is made from a non-porous material will automatically be free of phthalates, latex, and other chemicals, meaning you can be sure you’re using something that’s 100% body safe.

There are many great properties of non-porous sex toys besides being phthalate free:

• They can be fully sterilized.This means you can get all bacteria off of the toy by boiling it (if it doesn’t vibrate, or has a removable vibrator), washing it on the top shelf of your dishwasher, or wiping it down with a 10% bleach/90% water solution. This is handy for lots of reasons, but especially good if you want to ensure you’re getting you’re toy 100% clean. The ability to sterilize a toy is especially important for anal toys, since the anus harbors more bacteria than other parts of the body, and a porous toy is going to absorb that bacteria too. Using bleach or boiling water on porous toys will ruin or melt them, which is why they cannot be fully sterilized.
• They do not discolor or fall apart with use.The reason that some toys discolor or start to fall apart after several uses is that they absorb body fluids, lubricant, and dirt. Not only does this mean you can never fully sterilize them, it means you’re going to want to throw it away once it starts to change color. Non-porous toys do not discolor, which means you’ll keep the toy around longer since it doesn’t get dirty. I know that sounds a little gross, but it’s the truth when it comes to porous toys. Again, you can prevent this discoloration by using a condom over a porous toy during use.
• They conduct vibration better.Because non-porous toys are denser, they tend to have stronger vibration potential than jelly toys. This means you’re going to get more power out of your toy if it is made out of a non-porous material.

Now that you have a basic understanding of body-safe, non-porous toys, you just have to discover which toy materials are non-porous. Not all these silicone toys feel the same or have the consistency. Vixen and Tantus make mostly phallic-shaped objects that are soft and realistic feeling. Fun Factory makes a lot of soft, bright vibrating toys in different shapes and sizes. Lelo and Jimmy Jane make excellent vibrators that are firm to the touch and pack a lot of punch. Tantus and Fun Factory also make great anal toys. Just remember that any toy that is 100% silicone is going to say so on the packaging. A toy that says “pure silicone” or “hygienic silicone” or some variation of that is not likely to be 100% silicone and may contain other materials.

For hard non-porous materials, you have more than one option. Steel, Pyrex or glass, and medical-grade hard plastic are all great materials with different properties. Steel is heavy, indestructible and cool to the touch, which makes it a good choice for G and P-Spot stimulation. Any of the Njoy toys are great for vaginal or anal play. Pyrex and glass toys are not as heavy as steel, but are still solid, and can be heated up or cooled down in a bowl of water before use. Do you want a simple cock ring that goes on the base of the penis, or one more complex that will stimulate the testicles and perineum also? First, let’s start with materials. Working in a sex store, you learn very quickly that people’s brains generally process things in similar ways. People always have questions, and when they get up the nerve to ask, they’re usually pretty similar questions, too. I’ve put together a guide to a sex store so that you can walk in with confidence and be able to pose questions deeper than, “What’s good?” From my experience, the area of most confusion seems to be in the sex toy room, so let’s start there. What is a rabbit vs. a dildo vs. a vibrator? Well, there are simple categories you can lump toys into.

First, let’s discuss vibrating toys and non-vibrating toys. In the realm of vibrators, there are simple external stimulators such as bullets and pocket rockets, both typically a hard plastic material. Bullets are small in size, about two inches long and less than an inch around, with a button on the end. Make the bed in the morning, reduce clutter, and get everything off the floor that needn’t be there.

My boyfriend gave me sex for my birthday this year. Sex toys come in a variety of materials: plastic, glass, stainless steel, TPR (a silicone blend), and many others. But the fan favorite has to be silicone, and for several reasons. It’s soft and pliable, while still maintaining firmness. It has no smell to it and it won’t absorb any smells since it is nonporous. Also, being nonporous, it can be sterilized (more on that later) or simply cleaned with soap and water. Silicone is very durable and, with proper care, will last as long as you do. Silicone comes in many colors, whether you want to match your sheets, have something lifelike, or something undead-like. If your toy is anything but opaque, and the packaging says “silicone”, the manufacturer most likely means “silicone blend” (one exception is the Champlette Silver). Please note that silicone toys should not be used with silicone lube. Either use a water-based lube, or cover your toy with a condom. But first, a small section on how to sterilize your silicone toys.

Scenario One: you have a non-vibrating toy or a toy with a removable bullet and you are busy. Remove the bullet if your toy has one, place your toy(s) in the top rack of your dishwasher without soap, and turn on your dishwasher. The heat of the water is enough to sterilize your toy(s) so adding soap is just wasting soap.

Scenario Two: you have a non-vibrating toy or a toy with a removable bullet and you have a roommate. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Remove the bullet if your toy has one and submerge your toy(s) for about 2-5 minutes. You now have Dildo Soup and your toys are sterile!

Scenario Three: you have a vibrating toy. Take 1 tablespoon of bleach and 10 tablespoons of water and combine them in a bowl. Dip a cloth or paper towel in the solution and wipe down your toys. You can also store a large batch of bleach solution so you don’t have to make one every time you want to clean your toys– just use a 1/4 cup instead of a tablespoon and store in a spray bottle. This solution can also clean other nonporous surfaces in your home. If the thought of bleach coming into contact with sensitive areas worries you, keep in mind you can always clean your toys with soap and water afterwards.

Simply put, kegel balls are inserted into the vagina and the wearer uses their pubococcygeus (PC) muscles to keep the ball(s) in place. This week’s post is going to focus on bondage, because even the books and movies have to pick and choose what to focus on, and they have a lot more space. Next week I’ll start talking kinky toys.

Before we get into the accoutrements of kink, let’s do the important bit: all sexual acts should be consensual, and when you start getting into the “naughtier” things, this line can get a little blurred. ANY time bondage (handcuffs, rope, gags, or even holding somebody’s wrists or neck) gets involved, it is vital you have a “safe word.” The use of “yellow” and “red” is common; “yellow” means “I am near my limit” and “red” means “stop now.” If gags are involved, these need to be an easy-to-do but clear physical motion instead of a word, for obvious reasons.

For those of you thinking, “Why not just say ‘Stop’?” here’s why: You and your wife are playing a little schoolgirl fantasy. The teacher puts the student over his knee and says, “You have been very naughty and deserve a spanking.” She says, “No, don’t spank me!” Is that the schoolgirl saying “No,” or is it your beautiful wife? If you don’t have a safe word, now you have to stop the scene and ask.

Bondage toys can also be made from a variety of materials. Some people prefer metal, like handcuffs. Some people like rope or fabric because they can creatively tie and display their partner, or it feels more spur-of-the-moment to use “found” materials. If you are tying somebody up and using knots to secure them, it’s vital you keep scissors nearby to cut them loose if necessary. Never tie somebody so tightly they start to lose circulation. Also, it’s not advisable to use silk as a restraint material. Silk is very strong, but also slippery and stretchy. This means you can accidentally cinch knots down extremely tight while wriggling around having a fun time. With all these warnings, it makes sense that a lot of beginners and dabblers use store-bought restraints.

I made up some categories for restraining people. Once you figure out what you’re looking for, it’s easier to find what type of restraint you need.

Psychological Bondage

An example of this is when your girlfriend puts your hands above your head and presses them into the mattress and says, “Leave them there,” before giving you oral sex. This is fun for a lot of people because they know they can move at any time, and it feels a little naughty, knowing you could disobey and maybe get punished for it.

These Straps are for Leverage

Sometimes you aren’t binding somebody so they can’t move, you’re suspending them from the ceiling. Sex swings and variants on this theme are not really “bondage” but they use the same materials.

Oh, No, I “Can’t” Get Free

Fuzzy handcuffs fall into this category, as do a lot of the bondage cuffs. These are things that have a safety release so the bound person can get themselves free, if necessary. Usually this is only possible if your hands are bound together; good luck if you’re spread-eagled across the bed. Depending how you tie the rope, some rope bondage falls into this category. Collars and leashes fall into this category, as well.

I Can’t Get Free but I Can Move

If you’re tied spread-eagled to your bed, dangling from the door jamb, or hog tied, good luck getting free of your restraints, but if the straps are long enough, you can wiggle around and play at “escaping” or push back to meet your partner’s thrusts.

Bound and Immobile

It’s possible to tie somebody so they can’t move a muscle. Be careful, as this can put strain on joints, but some people really get off on being completely immobile. You can cinch down the straps on something like the Under the Bed Restraint System so your spread-eagled paramour can’t even struggle.

These next vibrators can be used internally or externally. The Liv is a great multipurpose vibrator with a nice tapered end. The Gigi looks just like the Liv with one difference: the flat head. This makes the Gigi a great tool for g-spot or clitoral stimulation. Both the Liv and the Gigi are relatively small vibrators, measuring about six inches in total length. Mona is a bit larger, with more of a curve and a slightly bulbous head. The Elise is a bit larger still, though it does not have the bulbous head. This week Katy is giving you an overview of how freaking cool the LELO brand is; they just came out with a new line called Insignia that are very sharp-looking! I thought I’d tell you about the LELO I own, and why I love it.

Like the ever-popular Lily, the Siri is one of LELO’s small, rechargeable clitoral stimulators. It’s a bit bigger than the the Lily and doesn’t have that C-shaped curve that made those toys great for male masturbation, but the larger size means there’s room for a larger motor, which means it’s more powerful. This particular toy is bowed out at the bottom so it has almost a ridge down the center to give you a good point of contact for clitoral stimulation.

Like all LELO toys, it’s not really water-resistant. I wasn’t looking for a shower-proof toy, but the directions say not to allow water to splash on the buttons, and that’s hard to do when you’re cleaning it. (Soap and hot water or a 10% bleach solution; don’t use alcohol!) This toy is made out of silicone so it feels really nice and soft, but that means you can’t use a silicone-based lubricant, only water-based like Pjur Med Repair Glide.

The Siri has the new buttons, like the Ina and Mona, which means there’s a separate button for (+) (-) (^) and (?). For those of you who discovered you would accidentally turn your Liv off by pushing the whole button down, the new design on these toys solves your problem. As with all LELO toys, pressing and holding the (+) button a few seconds turns the toy on; if you keep holding it down, it will go all the way to the top speed, which doesn’t rival the powerhorse Hitachi, but is still more than adequate!

The Siri is a bit stronger than the Nea and Lily, and has a bit more of a “throbby” vibration like the Gigi, rather than the high-pitched vibration of those other little clitoral stimulators. It also has the full gamut of LELO vibration modes: 1. Constant (zzzzzz), 2. Slow Pulse (z z z z), 3. Fast Pulse (z z z z z), 4. Fast Throb (zzZZ zzZZ), 5. Slow Throb (zzzzZZZZ zzzzZZZZ), and 6) I don’t know what they call this mode but it reminds me of the music from the original Mario Bros dungeons. (Nerd, here.)

To continue with our specs: two hours of charging and the Siri is ready to go (the We-Vibe wants a full 24!) and lasted through two uses before I charged it again just to be safe, (I learned the hard way from the JimmyJane Form 2 that toys lose their charge slowly when sitting around in off mode) though LELO says you can get 4 hours of play time or 90 days of standby on one charge.

This toy is a little bit louder than some of the others; but “louder” compared to complete silence is still pretty darn quiet. I usually don’t mind hearing the vibration on my toys, but some days I want silence, and this one is close enough for me!

I’m somebody who really liked the aforementioned Form 2: good power, nice vibration modes, etc; but it’s a little finicky and I strongly believe I shouldn’t have to be gentle with my sex toys. The Siri is great; it has more than enough power for me, I really enjoy the throbbing vibration modes, and it’s small enough to use during intercourse in certain positions. So far it has been used effectively in a spooning position and also in doggy-style but is too bulky for missionary or the way I like girl-on-top.

People come into the stores every week looking for products to enhance their love lives, be it with a partner or self-love. As a Romance Consultant, it is my job to ask how each person is doing and if they have any questions about anything. Every now and then, people insist they don’t need help and they end up picking an item that doesn’t suit their needs. Sadly, harnesses can fall under the category of “I-need-one-of-these-but-I-don’t-want-to-ask-questions-and-this-one-is-cheap-so-it-will-do”. Lucky for you, this entry is all about finding the right harness for you. So next time you’re in a store, you can say, “I’m finding everything I need, thanks. Katy let me know what I should look for.”

When most people think of strap-ons, they usually picture that hot girl-on-girl scene and wind up equating harnesses with lesbian sex play. While this is the main reason most people buy a harness, it is not the only reason to do so. Pegging, or “bend over boyfriend”, is when a man is penetrated by his female partner– this could not be possible without the use of a strap-on. Maybe you would love to penetrate your partners vagina and anus simultaneously but you don’t want to bring a third person into the mix (if you are interested in threesomes, see Anja’s post on introducing a fantasy to your partner). There are harnesses made for double penetration! Female to male transsexuals (aka trans men) often make use of harnesses either for packing pieces or sexual purposes. Or, like a friend of mine said, “I just want to see what I would look like with a purple penis.” Keep in mind what you want to use a harness for and you will have an easier time finding the one that is right for you.

There are three types of strap-ons: one-strap (that looks like a thong), two-strap (that looks like a jock strap), and strapless. A one-strap harness is usually less expensive and hides nicely under clothing. The Bare As You Dare Harness is a perfect example. One-strap harnesses are great for those on a budget, trans men who want to feel their penis is truly a part of them, or for those who want to surprise a partner after a date. The Menage A Trois Harness (for double penetration) is also a one-strap harness.

Two-strap harnesses have straps that wrap around the legs, providing the wearer with more control over the phallus while also leaving the genitals free to be played with. Most kits you will find use a two-strap harness, like the Bend Over Beginner Kit (perfect for pegging). The harness used has a little pocket in front where you can place the vibrating bullet. This way, not only does the phallus vibrate a little, but the wearer will also get stimulation while penetrating. The kit also comes with two dildos sized small and medium.

Strapless strap-ons are just what they sound like. When not in use, it can look like a double-ended dildo. The short end is worn by the penetrator and is held in place using the wearer’s kegel muscles. The Share by Fun Factory and the Feeldoe by Tantus are prime examples; they are made of medical grade silicone and are easily sterilized in the top rack of your dishwasher (or boiling water or 10% bleach solution). Strapless strap-on aficionados love these toys because both the penetrator and penetrated can feel what is going on; in this way, both partners can feel more connected. Something to keep in mind is that the “outside” end is heavier than the “inside” end and can be a little hard to hold onto. You may consider getting an inexpensive harness to help hold it in place.

Harnesses can make use of O rings or a Vac-U-Lock system. O rings are a fairly simple concept: dildo goes through ring and flanged base keeps it from falling out. Vac-U-Lock uses a dildo with a hole in the bottom that fits over a ribbed nub on the harness. The ribbed nub is nice to keep a toy in place, though switching toys can be difficult. If I had my choice, I would pick a harness with interchangeable O rings. Just because a harness has a ring does not mean rings can be interchanged. Look for the snaps; if it has snaps around the ring, that means you can use any size ring in the harness. This comes in handy when you are going from the Silk Small to the Goliath; just pick up a pack of O rings!

Most harnesses are machine washable as long as they are not made of leather, rubber, or plastic. Check the packaging (or ask an associate) to be sure. Leather and rubber can be cared for with special cleaners (or shined up with silicone lube). Keep this in mind when choosing a harness. Harnesses that are machine washable can be sterilized (put your washing machine on “hot” or use the boiling water method). When storing your harness, it’s always a good idea to store it flat, not wadded up, so you have an easier time figuring out how to put it on. It’s always nice to have a drawer for your sex toys– why not put your harness in there?

Freud did women a disservice. You see, Freud knew that females could have two types of orgasms: external (clitoral) and internal (g-spot). However, he claimed that external orgasms were “immature” and that “mature” women should be climaxing from penetration alone. Fortunately, with the rise of the Sexual Revolution, we know this to be untrue. Most women (around 70%) can’t orgasm from penetration alone. Now, if you would like to learn more about the g-spot, my friend Anja has written a post all about it. But for now, I would like to give this love nub the attention it deserves.

Sometimes your fingers are the best tools. It’s the easiest way to find out what works best for you. Do you like a light, flickering sensation or pressure? Quick back-and-forth movements or slow and rolling? When you know what works for you, it makes it easier to find the right toy.

If you decide to stick with fingers, you can still have fun with lube and arousal creams. Pink lubricant is a great silicone lube with added aloe and Vitamin E; silicone lubricant doesn’t evaporate when exposed to air so you won’t have to worry about it getting sticky or drying up. Just be sure that if you are using a dildo made of silicone or other soft materials to cover the dildo with a condom.

Whoopie Cream is an arousal cream that contains L-Arginine– an amino acid that increases blood flow. It feels a little tingly and warm (like how a lip plumper feels). Please note that L-Arginine can trigger an outbreak if you have the herpes virus.

If you decide to move on to toys, a vibrating cock ring is an easy way to introduce toys into your lovemaking. It will fit on any phallus, flesh or otherwise, and the vibrator comes into contact with the clitoris with each thrust. If you google “Does the G-Spot Exist?” you get 500,000 results and they all say different things. But the answer seems to be, from all the many books: there seems to be a cluster of nerves and blood-rich tissue on the front wall of the vagina that for some women is sensitive enough to cause orgasm when it is stimulated. I just figured I wasn’t one of them.

Then I met my current boyfriend and his long fingers met my G-spot. Then we found a position that allowed me to orgasm during intercourse, something I had never experienced before. (Needless to say, this one’s a keeper.) I am by no means a scientific expert on the Graftenberg spot, but I have learned some things through personal experience that I think are worth sharing.

Before you start the G-spot exploration, it’s important to know that some, but not all women find that their G-spot orgasms come accompanied with a flood of liquid, usually called “squirting” or “gushing.” It’s not pee. But the sensation that precedes it feels a little like you have to go; to reassure yourself, go ahead and take a quick trip to the toilet beforehand. If you discover you’re a squirter and can’t stop it from happening, it might be worth investing in a Liberator Throe, which is soft like a throw blanket but has a waterproof layer inside. Many women find the experience strange and surprising, and recommend exploration alone before sharing with a partner.

Most of us can’t reach our G-spots on our own without some awkward wrist positions, so when you go in search of a toy you want something that’s firm, has a curve, and will hold its shape, since the G-spot responds best to pressure. Some good choices are the Slimline G and the Breeze Wisteria, which are both hard plastic vibrators with a handle and a bulb at a 45 degree angle on the end to press against the g-spot. These toys are great when you’re just starting out but if you’re serious about G-stim (which is a term I just made up), you will want to invest in the Njoy Pure Wand because it is curved perfectly and has two differently-sized ends depending on what you prefer. Also, the unbalanced weight means it almost does all the work on its own. If you want a more versatile toy, look at the LELO Gigi, which vibrates and is fantastic for clitoral stimulation as well as G-stim. If you’re lucky enough to have a patient and enthusiastic partner, have them try the “Spiderman” method of fingering the G-spot: using your middle and ring fingers 2-3 inches inside of her, stimulate the front of the vaginal wall with a “come hither” or “pulling” motion. (Do it and you’ll get why it’s the “Spiderman.”) Some people find they prefer one finger, or a different combination of fingers. Some people cross their fingers like they’re telling a lie and then slide them inside. Play around, see what works! (And cut your fingernails before you try this, folks.) Try using a silicone lubricant like Wet Platinum or System Jo Premium for Women to ease the way.

There are intercourse positions that will stimulate the G-spot, you just have to find one that works. If the penis (or the dildo in your harness) naturally curves upwards, you may be getting along fine with missionary. If it curves downwards, doggy-style might be better. If it isn’t so curvy, or curves to the side, girl-on-top positions where your torsos are close together bend his penis towards his stomach and her G-spot (try it with him seated in a chair and her in his lap!); reverse cowgirl bends everything the other way and leaves the breasts bouncing free for fondling. Sometimes people find just adding a pillow or Liberator Wedge under her hips in missionary tilts everything for G-nirvana.

Many people do not wish to talk about sex at all, let alone anal sex. That is perhaps why there are so many assumptions and questions about anal sex. Because I can’t possibly cover all the information on anal sex (and there is A LOT), I have just covered the basics.

First things first, you will probably want to purchase a copy of The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women by Tristan Taormino. Don’t think that because the title says women this book is not suitable for men; everyone has an anus and we believe all anuses should be treated equally. This book covers everything from just beginning to BDSM play and it will shatter any negative thoughts about anal sex. Ms. Taormino covers a plethora of information intelligently and humorously.

Anal sex has its own mantra; everyone has their own take on the words but I usually say “Communication, Relaxation, Lubrication”. You need all these elements and you need a lot of them. While we don’t sell communication or relaxation, we do sell lubrication! For anal sex, pick either a slick silicone lube like Pjur Bodyglide or a thick water-based lube like Maximus. Silicone lubes are nice because they are very slick and don’t get absorbed as quickly as water-based lubes. Just be sure to cover any soft toys with a condom if you plan on using silicone lube with them. Water-based lubes are nice because they are easy to find and they are compatible with all toys. Just be sure to use one that is the consistency of hair gel. There are two reasons for this: it won’t be absorbed as quickly as a thinner counterpart and it provides a cushioning effect. Whatever you choose, just be sure to use plenty of it as the anus is not self-lubricating.

It is always a good idea to explore on your own first– and it’s a must to start slowly. Arm yourself with a pair of gloves or a finger cot along with your lube of choice and go to town. Start at the pucker and feel around– be aware of how each sensation feels so you or your partner can replicate it later. Once you’re ready to go inside, insert up to the first knuckle and stay there; stay still at first and then move around a bit. Repeat this gradually and when you are ready to add another finger, add more lube. This should not hurt at any time. If it does, add more lube, slow down, or take a break and masturbate, or come back to it later.

Because fingering your backdoor while doing other activities can be awkward, toys were invented! Be sure to choose only toys with a flanged base as the rectum has no end and objects (especially spherical objects) can get stuck. Materials are important as well; always try to pick toys made of non-porous materials like silicone, glass, stainless steel, or medical-grade plastic. Non-porous toys can be sterilized (top rack of dishwasher/boiling water/10% bleach solution) and will last forever if cared for properly.

Porous toys not only can’t be sterilized but also absorb; this means all that precious lube is being sucked up by your toy. Porous toys can start to smell after a while if they are used anally. With extended use and cleaning, porous toys eventually start to break down.

There are two basic types of anal toy: beads and plugs. Anal beads are pliable, consist of about 5-10 beads, and start with a small bead and end with a large bead. There is a space between each bead, allowing the wearer to start small, relax, and move on to a larger bead. Since anal beads must be pliable, they are not available in glass, plastic, or metal. Silicone is the best way to go for anal beads– like the Ophoria Rapture Anal Chain 6. Anal beads can also be moved in and out, or pulled out to induce or enhance orgasm.

How to Choose a Sex Toy

Before you head into Fascinations to pick out a toy for yourself of your significant other, it helps to have an idea in mind. We’re always happy to guide you into a great purchase, and have a lot of fun doing it, but the more you know, the better job we can do. This short list of questions to consider is especially important if you’re buying a toy for a partner.

I started talking to a young man the other day who really wanted to buy a vibrator for his girlfriend. We started discussing what he was looking for (“Um, a vibrator, I guess?”), what type of stimulation she enjoyed (“Um, sex, I guess?”) and about ten minutes into our talk he decided it was probably best he go home and “do a little more research” into her preferences and desires. Things to think about when buying your first sex toy:

1) Is this toy for you, for a partner, or for a friend?

The more up front you are, the less uncomfortable we both will be when I realize the butt plug I’m showing you is actually for your husband and we should find you something shaped for prostate stimulation!

2) Do you want a toy that vibrates?

6) Does it need to be waterproof?

7) Will you be sharing this toy with anybody you aren’t exclusive with? Is this an anal AND vaginal toy?

If you use condoms for protection when you’re having sex with a person, so should your sex toy. If a toy is used anally, it shouldn’t be used vaginally UNLESS it’s 100% silicone (or another non-porous material such as stainless steel, pyrex, or certain plastics) and has been sterilized, otherwise bacteria can be transferred. If you’re planning to use a toy with multiple partners, it’s best to get something that’s 100% silicone and sterilizable, even if you’re using condoms. You can never be too careful!

Silicone lube is water-resistant and lasts forever without getting sticky. Try Pjur Bodyglide or Gun Oil Silicone– the label on the Gun Oil is removable, so it looks like a bottle of hair serum. Please note that silicone lubes are VERY slippery. This makes for an excellent long-lasting lube, but if you drip some on the floor of the shower or tub, please clean it up right away. Also, if you are planning on using silicone or other soft toys, be aware that silicone lube can damage them. An easy fix is to simply slip a condom or dental dam over the toy, apply the lube, and go to town! Otherwise, sex in water and silicone lube go together like cake and ice cream!

After having worked at Fascinations for a while, I finally bought a We-Vibe II a few weeks ago. I tried it, liked it, and– with Christmas coming up– decided to write a review on it.

First, the basics. The We-Vibe is the original and one of the only toys on the market designed to be worn internally while having sex. It is rechargeable, so you never have to find batteries for it, and with no exposed outlets, it is safe to use in the shower. The We-Vibe II also has a one-year warranty so if there are any defects, it can be replaced. It is made of medical-grade silicone which makes it easy to clean and even sterilizable. Be sure to use a water-based lube with the We-Vibe II; there are two reasons for this. First, you will need to use a lubricant with the toy since it will chafe without lube. Second, since the toy is silicone, pick a water-based lube (like Pink Water) that won’t break down the material.

The We-Vibe II is U-shaped with a slim end and a larger end. The slim end is worn internally to stimulate the g-spot while the larger end rests on the clitoris. The larger end contains the charging port as well as the button to turn it on and control the functions. It has nine different settings: Low Speed, High Speed, Throb, Wave, Pulse, Ramp, Tease, Ascending, and Cha-Cha. Simply press the button to turn it on and press it each time you want a different sensation. To turn off, you can cycle through the settings or press and hold the button for three seconds. The directions say to charge the toy for 24 hours, but I feel it only needs about 6-8 hours of charge time. There will be a divot where you pierce the material with the charger.

Ok, now the fun stuff. Using the We-Vibe II is very nice. The combined clitoral and g-spot stimulations are quite interesting. Even if you have used a rabbit-style vibrator, this is a very unique feeling– especially with an added phallus! I didn’t need to use nearly as much lube as I thought I would since the slim end doesn’t take up much room at all. My boyfriend REALLY likes using the We-Vibe II because he says it feels like I am the one vibrating, not the toy! And don’t worry, the toy will not pop out when it is in use. However, when changing positions the toy can pop out– mostly because you are aroused and accommodating at this point, you are lubed up, and gravity is in the mix. To avoid having the We-Vibe II pop out while changing positions, simply hold the external end to your body. And if it does pop out, just have a laugh and move on.

The We-Vibe II is wonderful for intercourse, but it can be used for even more! Masturbation is the most obvious alternative way to use the toy. For her, it’s quite simple: pop in a salacious movie, put the We-Vibe II in, find a setting you like, and enjoy. For him: pop in a salacious movie, place the We-Vibe II in your palm, turn it on, and stroke to desired result. And masturbating a partner is just as easy! You can use the We-Vibe II as an oral helper as well. Instructions are the same as masturbating a partner (for her, you may have to move the clitoral end to the side) while substituting a flavored lube (like System Jo Flavors) and adding your mouth. The We-Vibe II is also great for strap-on sex. The giver, receiver, or both can wear the toy for extra stimulation. It can even be used as a BDSM toy– I’m sure all you sadistic tops can find a way to work it into the scene. So the We-Vibe II is not just for intercourse! I do have some tips for using the We-Vibe II:

-Never over bend the toy. This could cause it to break and, I believe, cause the vibrations to become weaker.

-If you are used to a weapons-grade toy like the Hitachi Magic Wand, the We-Vibe II may not be strong enough to get you to orgasm. It still makes a fantastic foreplay toy. If you are not used to using toys during sex, Low Speed may be all you need.

-Start with the Low Speed anyway– if you start with High Speed, you have nowhere to go but lower.

-If you like to change the settings on a toy you are using, try not to get lube on the outside part of the toy. If there is lube on the button, it is extremely hard to press down and change the setting.

-Do not use your fingernail to change the setting. This can pierce the silicone.

-When inserting the charger, don’t point up, just go in straight.

So there you have it. I feel the We-Vibe II is a worthy investment– and a fantastic Christmas gift! And we will be getting the We-Vibe II in two new colors: teal and ruby!

My absolute favorite thing at Fascinations is lube. I have been using lube since I started having sex and continue to use lube for the vast majority of my sexual activities. Before I started working at Fascinations, I (like most people) thought the only reason to use a lubricant was if you didn’t produce enough naturally. If you need or like to use lube, there is nothing wrong with you.

In fact, here are some reasons to use lube, as well as recommendations for each situation.

Sometimes it really is necessary. We are taught that when women get turned on, they lubricate. However, certain factors can affect lubrication. Are you stressed, taking birth control, depressed, taking an antidepressant, dehydrated, drunk, menopausal, or taking an antihistamine? ANY of these could be the culprit. And if you aren’t lubed up, and go ahead with sex, it can be uncomfortable. So do what I did and use this as a way to have fun and try a variety of lubes to see which one works best for you!

1. To keep a condom/dam/gloves from breaking. I applaud anyone for engaging in safer sex practices! But did you know that lube can help? Latex and latex alternatives are porous. That means that lubrication can be absorbed by the barrier. When the lubrication is absorbed, the barrier can dry up, making it prone to breakage. When a barrier breaks, diseases/babies can happen. So make safer sex even safer with some great lube!

For either 1 or 2 I highly recommend Pink Water. It’s glycerin-free formula doesn’t get sticky and is great for more sensitive vulvas. Or, if you’re a silicone fan, try Pjur Light. It is a thin silicone lube that won’t dry out, so it will last as long as you do. Please note that oil should never be used with barriers, as oil will destroy latex. Actually, just don’t mix oil and orifices since oil can linger in the body and cause infection.

1) Anal sex. The anus DOES NOT lubricate! This means that lube is absolutely necessary. You wouldn’t want to hurt yourself or your partner, would you? Lubrication is one of the key components in good anal sex (as well as communication and relaxation).

If you are planning on using toys made of anything other than glass, plastic, or metal, be aware that silicone lube melts soft toys made of silicone, jelly, etc. If this is a concern for you, or if you prefer water-based lubes, pick up a bottle of Maximus. It is glycerin-free and about the consistency of hair gel which has a very nice cushioning effect.

1) To make oral sex tastier! Many of us love the way our partner tastes, but there are flavored lubes out there that can make your lover taste like your favorite fruit! Also, when you taste something you like, you salivate, thereby providing more lubrication.

System Jo Flavors taste the most like the picture on the bottle and they have the lowest level of glycerin of any flavored lube we carry. My favorites are peach, pomegranate, and watermelon– but there is a wide variety to choose from. Each flavor also comes in a one-ounce tube great for travel or an at-home lube tasting.

2) So sex in water won’t chafe. People enjoy sex in water all the time, be it a shower, a hot tub, or the ocean. But water washes away natural and water-based lubrication, which can make things a bit uncomfortable. Fortunately, silicone lubes are water-resistant, making them great for sex in water!

Pink is a silicone lubricant with added aloe and vitamin E to condition your skin during and after your underwater adventures. Be sure to apply Pink before you get in the water to make things easier.

3) To make masturbation more interesting. As stated above, just because you are turned on doesn’t mean you’ll automatically lubricate. Even so, many dildos are somewhat porous and can absorb lubrication. And if you’re a guy, you don’t even have the option to use self-produced lubricant. Make things a little more slippery next time you wax the dolphin or polish your pearl.

For ladies, pick up a bottle of Frolic, a slightly thick water-based formula with anti-bacterial properties. Great for all types of toys! For gentlemen who fancy a bottle of Jergens, try Stroke 29 Masturbation Cream. It lasts much longer than a typical lotion, and moisturizes your member in the process! Remember that oil should never be used internally, and since Stroke 29 is oil-based, you should only use it on your twig and two berries.

4) Because lube is fun! There are many lubes now that have tingling, warming, or cooling sensations. In fact, many couples’ lubes are based on this–one is usually warming, while the other is tingling or cooling. Some lubes even contain ginseng or other herbs to give them an “enhancing” effect.
