Shanna,
Can a woman use sex toys during pregnancy?
-Erika
This is a great question, and one I actually have gotten pretty often. Doctors often will tell women when they can be sexually active during pregnancy, but neglect to talk about sex toys and other such items.
The answer? If the doctor says you shouldn’t be having sex, that means no toys as well. Better safe than sorry.
However, if you’ve gotten the ok to be having sex (which is usually ok), toys are pretty much ok too. Now, I’d stay away from super hard materials (like glass, metal, etc) for insertables, and I’d make sure not to be too incredibly aggressive with using any insertable, but you should be fine.
Because of the transfer from your body to the fetus, I’d make sure to ONLY use body friendly materials, like silicone, or put a condom over your other toys. Phthalates are iffy enough for a singular, healthy person. I wouldn’t test them out on a pregnant woman.
Also, even if you can’t have insertables, make sure to ask your OB-GYN about clitoral stimulation. You might not be allowed to have anything inside, but perhaps a vibrator on the clit will do you just fine.
Bottom line: you should be ok, but in cases like this, always always double check with your medical professional.
