Dear Shanna -
My new girlfriend is totally down with getting it on while her Aunt Flo is in town, but I’ve never had sex with someone on their period. Is it safe? Healthy? Sanitary? Anything else I need to know before I try this out?
Thanks,
Taylor

Taylor,
Great question! Lots of people are unsure about things when in comes to surfing the red tide. As far as can it be done? But of course! People have been having sex on their periods for ages. It is completely safe, sanitary and all that.
That said, there is a slightly higher risk for STI (sexually transmitted infections) transmission during that time of the month, so unless you’re fluid bound, you should use protection, just like any other time. If you’re worried about the blood, you can always use a glove and/or dams with her, even if you don’t usually. Some menstrual cups can be worn during sex, but honestly, if she wears a tampon up until you two are ready to play, and then takes it out, often times the body will naturally slow down on blood production and up lube production.
Oh! I almost forgot all the benefits of sex on the rag (or as I like to call it, Shark Week!). Menstrual blood can act as an amazing natural lubricant that just doesn’t dry up (and can be combined with other lubes). Plus, orgasms can help with cramping issues, and really, who doesn’t want to help their partner decrease the cramp-age. Also, sex makes people happy, and happy people are always better to be around. Don’t forget, lots of people get a little extra horny around that time of the month due to hormone fluctuation, so it can be a great way to help your partner satisfy their needs.
Keep all this in mind, but remember that not everyone wants to have period sex. It’s fine to want to, and fine not to want to, just remember to respect your partner’s wishes, and to not say horrible or negative things. Period sex can be fabulous; no reason to knock it.

Menstrual cups during penis-in-vagina sex? Is that really possible (unless the woman has a very long vagina or the man has a very small penis)?
On the other hand, cups can be *very* useful for cunnilingus
