Ask Shanna: Piercing My Nipples

by funlove on April 30, 2010

Dear Shanna -

I’ve been thinking about getting my nipples pierced, but I’ve heard all sorts of horror stories about never being able to breast feed, losing all sensation, never being able to wear lace bras again, etc. Can you give me a little bit more real info on this piercing, and tell me whether you think I should do it or not?

What a great question. This is one of those things that gets talked about constantly, but it seems as though there is not a lot of information available. I think some of the best info can be found here, on Infinite Body Piercing’s website (they’re based in Philly, but the info is relevant anywhere).

While piercings and the side effects are different depending on the person, most people find that they GAIN nipple sensation, rather than lose it. You CAN breast feed with pierced nipples, although you may want to put in clear acrylic spacers so that your baby doesn’t suck on the ring/barbells. No lace bras for the first bit while healing, but as long as your rings/barbells fit and lie flat against your breasts, you should be able to wear anything you like as far as lingerie once you’re healed.

It can take quite a while for nipple piercing to heal, which means no touching/licking/nibbling/biting, and it means staying out of oceans/pools/hot tubs too. Make sure you time your piercing so it’s not right before the family vacation to the beach, or when your long distance lover is coming to town.

Best of luck!

Shanna

That is great info. My husband wants me to get mine done, and im soo scared to. Altho I have a tongue ring and a tattoo, I really dont like pain like that… But it does intrigue me, and my question is this.. I have rather large breasts – 48DDD… And i know that after you get your nipple pierced people have said to not wear a bra for a while, as it can cause irritation or what not.. I cant quite go out without a bra, especially to work. Is that the case? Should I not wear a bra for a while? Is it different for larger breasts to get pierced? I know the healing time is like forever (not literally tho), but.. i guess Im more scared of the pain, and how long it will hurt for, and what all will make it hurt…..

Laura – thanks for sharing that!

Jennifer – I too have “large tracks of land” and have always been told that you should skip a bra for the first few days, but then can wear a sports bra daily while they’re healing. As always, check with the piercer!

I, too, have both of my nipples pierced. I found they were too sensitive as they were first healing, and it was better to wear a really good, supportive bra to keep everything from moving around. I would whole-heartedly recommend NOT skipping a bra the first few days (as somebody with 36-DDs, that isn’t really an option for me either, lol) because having the material of your shirt rubbing against your nipples every time you move is really overwhelming. I also find my nipples are constantly erect and uber-sensitive if I wear a sports bra, so that’s maybe not a great idea.
But yeah, they pinch your nipples pretty hard to pierce them, and that’s honestly the part that hurts the most. Me, I like a little pain so it didn’t bother me, but a friend of mine also had hers done and when I said it didn’t really hurt she looked at me like I was crazy and said, “Yes it did! It hurt like hell!” so maybe don’t take my word for it.
So there’s my two cents!
